Gameflow Improvement

Based on theories of Flow, immersion, and player enjoyment while playing, we have developed a model for evaluating the commercial success of any video game. Commercial usage of this model has shown that a high score in our evaluation matrix within the model directly relates to the success of the product. Our model has been further tested in various academic situations as well as in professional development environments.

With the evaluation matrix, we assess player enjoyment in eight criteria as follows: concentration, challenge, player skills, control, clear goals, feedback, immersion and social interaction. Based on the sub-questions we can easily detect weak points of the game and possibilities for improvement. The model is applied using observation and evaluation methodologies, and focus groups can be employed if required.

Past usage has shown a direct correlation between the results of our evaluation and game reviewer comments of the completed game. A low score in our evaluation equals a low rating on reviewer sites. Our model can be applied at any stage of the development, however we suggest that the earlier that this is done, the easier it is for recommended changes to be applied.

At Pivec Labs, we can analyze a game idea or prototype for immersive qualities and player enjoyment, and recommend changes to the design, the structure, or the mechanics of the product. Contact us for further information.
